Sometimes you can be your own worst enemy by self-sabotaging your desire to live a godly life and falling back into your old sinful habits. But instead of feeling sorry for yourself because you failed once again, take a good look at yourself and ask, “What went wrong?” It’s important to understand “why” you failed. Anytime you take your eyes off of Jesus, just like Peter walking on water–you will fall. When you stop having daily worship, spending time reading God’s Word, or quit going to church, you have put distance between you and God.
You may desire a closer walk with Jesus, but at the same time you are wanting to hang on to the world's sinful pleasures. It’s as if you have one foot in the spiritual canoe and the other in a speed boat. Sooner or later you’ll be tossed out by both. Anytime you want something but then go about making sure it “won’t'' happen . . . is self-sabotage.
Whether you procrastinate, allow insecurity take over, or are paralysed in a self-made prison of fear, you prevent yourself from becoming the person God wants you to be. In order to grow in your relationship with God, you need to study, pray, and exercise your faith. When you stop moving, you stop growing, and when you stop growing, you get all caught up in sin’s cycle of repeating failures and bad habits. Ultimately this will leave you frustrated, discouraged, and weighed down with guilt.
When God gives you a task, go forward with faith-fueled determination and be sure that your worst enemy doesn’t live between your ears. Telling yourself all the reasons that you “can’t” do something is not exercising faith and trust in Jesus. In fact, when you self-sabotage, you are actually blocking God’s blessings and opening the door for the devil to come in. Claim God’s promise in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” and move out of your own way. Don’t allow any thought or action to prevent you from achieving a close relationship with God.
When the Holy Spirit says “move,” don’t stand still–MOVE! Psalm 119:133 says, “Establish my footsteps in Your Word. And do not let any iniquity have dominion over me.”
Claim this promise for yourself, and you can win the battle over temptation and sin.
