There is a huge difference between having an opinion and judging. When you see a friend of yours who has been going through a financial crisis and you see him driving a fancy sports car, you could easily have an opinion or two about it. You might think, “Wow! What a gorgeous car,” or “things must be looking up for him”. But you are definitely judging if you were thinking any of these thoughts “I can't believe he wasted money on a new car when he can't even provide for his own family” or “what a jerk driving a new car when he knows he can't afford it, he calls himself a christian and he is not even a good steward with his money”. One is an opinion and the others are judging. Our eyes can be deceiving. Someone may even have given him that car as a gift, maybe he received a large sum of money, or he may have just been driving a friend's car or a hundred other scenarios. But the bottom line is this, only God has the right to judge. It is not wrong to have an opinion, but it is a sin to judge. The Bible says in Matthew 7:1, “Do not judge or you will be judged”. In Romans 14:10 we're told “You, then why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? But we will all stand before God's judgment seat”. And in verse 13, the plea is made “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister”. Ask God to put more love in your heart for your fellow man, and leave the judging to God.
Matthew 7:1-2 KJV - Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
Luke 6:37-42 KJV - Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.
Romans 2:1 KJV - Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
James 4:11-12 KJV - Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of [his] brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
